Delta Air Lines, Troutman Sanders Recognized for Providing Pro Bono Services to Immigrants
ATLANTA, Jan. 3, 2017 – The Daily Report recognized Troutman Sanders and its client Delta Air Lines for their collaboration to provide pro bono legal services to immigrant victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, sexual assault and other crimes.
The article recognized Peter Carter, Delta’s Chief Legal Officer, and his efforts to promote a healthy pro bono program within Delta’s Department of Law. As part of Carter’s initiative, Delta partnered with Troutman Sanders to take on cases from the Georgia Asylum and Immigration Network (GAIN), a nonprofit organization that helps human trafficking victims obtain visas and obtain other assistance. GAIN provided training to Delta and Troutman Sanders legal professionals and then teams of Delta and Troutman Sanders professionals took on cases.
According to the U.S. Justice Department, Atlanta is a hotspot for human trafficking, an issue Delta is working to combat in part by training its employees to identify and report potential instances of criminal activity. Carter discusses the need for lawyers to serve the community and how GAIN became a natural fit for a pro bono partnership.
Troutman Sanders partner Byron Kirkpatrick, who is a GAIN volunteer attorney and has also served on the organization’s board, spoke with The Daily Report. He compliments the work of Delta and of Carter, acknowledging that when the General Counsel for one of the city’s largest companies takes such an active role in representing pro bono clients, “it sends a powerful message.”
