FTC’s Deal With Uber Shows It Won’t Let Up On Data Security
Partner Mark Mao is quoted in a Law360 story about the recent settlement imposed by the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) against Uber for “failing to deliver on its data-security promises.” Experts weigh in on what the FTC decision means for businesses moving forward. Mao is quoted, saying, “It was unclear whether this FTC was going to follow the previous administration's policies. At least on the categories of 'sensitive information,' this FTC also took the position in this case that 'geolocation information' was 'sensitive information.'" He also noted, “Specifically identifying 'low-cost measures' as a means of making security reasonable demonstrates that this FTC is more business-friendly, and that it will not necessarily require that companies implement more expensive solutions.”
