Lawyers Explore 'Blurred Lines' Verdict
Atlanta associate Austin Padgett was quoted in an April 1 Law.com article and an April 2 Daily Report article about lawyers at a UGA conference debating the complicated and confusing realm of determining copyright homage and fair use from blatant copyright rip-off.
In the articles, the recent case involving Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams and their $7.4 million payment to Marvin Gaye’s estate for copying parts of his 1977 song in their 2013 hit “Blurred Lines,” was used as a talking point. Austin stated, per the article, that courts haven’t provided artists or consumers with “any meaningful guidance” on what exactly crosses the line or where that line exists.
