MLB Wearable Tech Experiment Raises Athlete Privacy Issues
Mark Mao was quoted in a March 14 Law360 article about Major League Baseball’s decision to allow players to use wearable fitness devices. Of this development, Mao said, “From a player perspective, if I was playing by the rules and a naturally gifted athlete, I would probably say I wouldn’t mind being monitored because that probably will up my value to the team. The problem is probably going to be that as you age, those factors become very tangible, and they probably could become a problem in terms of contract negotiations.” Mao also mentioned that wearable devices are or soon will be advanced enough to detect evidence of performance-enhancing drug use.
