Troutman Sanders Partner Byron Kirkpatrick Receives Tapestri Award
ATLANTA – Sept. 23, 2016 – Troutman Sanders LLP announced today that partner Byron Kirkpatrick’s pro bono work was recognized at Tapestri’s Sixth Annual “Live Without Fear” event, where he received the Lead Attorney Award.
The award is presented to a remarkable lawyer who has demonstrated excellence in their service to foreign-born survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. The recipient is someone who has given back to the community in a meaningful way by helping these victims and their families rebuild their lives.
Tapestri began as a community coalition in 1996 to address the unmet and increasing needs of battered refugee and immigrant women in the metro Atlanta area. Two years later, the coalition formally adopted the name “Tapestri” and functioned as a project of the Refugee Women’s Network.
“Byron goes above and beyond to assist these victims in establishing legal status,” said Mark Newman, Chair of the Atlanta office Pro Bono Committee. “He is providing a window of hope for a better life; one that sets them on a path which can lead to citizenship. We are proud of his accomplishments.”
In 2002, Tapestri became its own independent organization created to address the needs of foreign-born survivors of violence. The organization began working collaboratively with other organizations such as the Georgia Asylum and Immigration Network (GAIN) which provides free legal representation for these victims.
“They are tireless advocates,” said Kirkpatrick. “It is a privilege to work with Tapestri and it is a great pleasure to work with their community partners, like GAIN, to bring hope to immigrant victims of violence.”
