Troutman Sanders Partner Mark Cohen Confirmed to Federal Court
ATLANTA, GA -- Troutman Sanders LLP announced today that Mark H. Cohen, a partner in the firm’s Atlanta office, has been confirmed by the United States Senate to be a United States District Judge for the Northern District of Georgia. Cohen was nominated by President Obama on December 19, 2013, and was confirmed by the Senate on a voice vote November 18, 2014.
“For the past 15 years, Mark has been a wonderful partner and a trusted advisor to his clients,” said Troutman Sanders chairman Robert W. Webb, Jr. “While we are sad to see him go, we know he will be an excellent addition to the federal bench. We congratulate him and wish him the best as he takes on this important role.”
As a partner with Troutman Sanders, Cohen has represented both private and governmental entities in federal and state litigation, both trial and appellate. In his regulatory practice, Cohen also advised clients on issues relating to procurement matters, rule-making and corporate governmental compliance.
Prior to joining Troutman Sanders in 1999, Cohen had an extensive legal career in state government. He spent 13 years as an assistant and senior assistant attorney general, where he represented the State of Georgia before both state and federal courts. He also advised numerous state and local agencies on a wide variety of matters, including education, election and voting rights, professional licensing, health care and law enforcement.
Between 1995-1998, Cohen served as Executive Counsel for Gov. Zell Miller, and became his Chief of Staff during his final year in office. In 1995, Gov. Miller appointed Cohen to serve as Georgia’s first Chief State Administrative Law Judge, where he was responsible for the formation of the Office of State Administrative Hearings, the agency charged with conducting licensing and regulatory hearings for the majority of state agencies.
In 1976, Cohen received his B.A., graduating magna cum laude, from Emory University, where he also received his J.D. in 1979.
