Troutman Sanders Represents Saving Sweet Briar, Inc. in Successful Effort to Prevent the Closing of Sweet Briar College
On Monday, June 22, 2015, the settlement among parties to the litigation over the announced closure of Sweet Briar College was approved by Judge James W. Updike. The settlement results in the College remaining open under a change in leadership.
About a week after the College announced the closure, Troutman Sanders LLP was engaged to represent a group of alumnae that formed Saving Sweet Briar Inc.
This settlement is the culmination of a very complicated case and one that many thought could not be brought in court, much less won. Work done on three fronts simultaneously was a key reason for success. Work proceeded throughout the 100 days of representation on public relations, litigation and mediation. Troutman Sanders lawyers, including Ashley Taylor, Bill Hurd, Carter Glass, Nancyellen Keane, Stephen Piepgrass, Reade Jacob, Brad Davenport, George Somerville, and Jake Lutz brought their different talents to the effort.
