The Hub Cures Speaker Series: Collaboration Fueling Innovation to Fight the Pandemic
Tuesday, July 21 • 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. ET
Crisis create new heroes and Dr. Sherry Yu and Bea Dalton certainly fall into that category. Join us as Dr. Jenny Ro, co-founder of Curious Reactor, former Harvard Post-Doc, leads a conversation with two young women who juggled demanding day jobs and volunteer efforts as they innovated to meet the shortage of PPE and ventilators-no formal experience in manufacturing medical supplies or devices.
Dr. Sherry Yu, MD is Deland Fellow at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Bea Dalton is a recent graduate of Smith College Engineering Science, now working at the Office of Senator Richard Blumenthal in DC. When the pandemic hit, Dr. Yu became the master hand of medical supply and innovation in Greater Boston as a project manager of PPE Innovation and Conservation workgroup at BWH and a clinical lead of Pan-Fab. Bea, on the other hand, put her head together with 30 other Smith College faculty, student, and alumni under the leadership of Professor Susannah Howe to participate in MGH's worldwide CoVent-19 Challenge to create a simple, cost-effective, and easily manufacturable open source ventilator. After weeks of competing with renowned engineers from places like NASA and SpaceX, Smith College team won the Challenge as of July 1st: https://www.fastcompany.com/90523017/this-2500-ventilator-is-a-masterclass-in-designing-for-the-covid-19-era.
