Hsiao ("Mark") Mao is a partner in the Cybersecurity, Information Governance and Privacy and Business Litigation practices of Troutman Sanders. Mark is certified by the International Association of Privacy Professionals "(IAPP"), for their ISO-approved programs, as a Fellow of Information Privacy ("FIP"), Certified Information Privacy Technologist ("CIPT"), and a Certified Information Privacy Professional for the United States ("CIPP/US"). He was previously an IT-consultant at Arthur Anderson Consulting, implementing database software.

Mark’s practice focuses primarily on emerging-technologies and data-based products, with a particular interest in their intellectual property and privacy law needs. He has substantial experience advising and litigating on behalf of companies across a broad spectrum of products, including connected things ("IoT"), autonomous vehicles, automation/machine-learning, augmented and virtual reality, gaming, real-time targeting technologies, shared-economies, aggregation technologies, broadband, and security hardware and software.

Mark has successfully defended numerous organizations through difficult intellectual property disputes, insider/shareholder disputes, and consumer class actions where the regulatory and legal issues continue to evolve rapidly, such as in the areas of Telephone Consumer Protection Act ("TCPA") and Fair Credit Reporting Act ("FCRA") litigation. Mark has advised companies throughout their product life cycles on emerging and global privacy law issues, in addition to handling their data breach needs.

Prior to joining Troutman Sanders, Mark was the Co-Chair of the Technology Practice and the Vice-Chair of its Financial Services Practice at Kaufman, Dolowich & Voluck LLP, a national law firm. Mark successfully defended numerous organizations involved in financial services, particularly those involved in insurance, real estate, and professional services.

Mark believes in litigating efficiently and effectively for his clients, so that organizations can focus on their growth while mitigating their risks. Mark was named a Rising Star in Super Lawyers Magazine in 2016 and 2017.
