Ronald Sum concentrates his practice in all areas of dispute resolution, specializing in China related matters, cross border disputes, transportation, international trade, insurance and reinsurance, product liability and product recall, including arbitration, litigation, mediation and investigations.

He is a fellow member of the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators and fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Ronald is the Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce Arbitration and ADR Sub-Committee. He is on the panel of arbitrators of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (“HKIAC”) and has acted as arbitrator in HKIAC administered arbitration proceedings. Ronald is also on the Panel of Arbitrators of Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration. Ronald has conducted arbitrations in Hong Kong, Singapore, London, United States, and Australia. Ronald is also an accredited mediator of the Law Society of Hong Kong. Ronald is qualified to practice in Hong Kong, England and Wales and Australia.

Ronald’s experience on dispute resolution includes complex commercial litigation, export credit insurance and letters of credit disputes, shareholders and minority shareholders disputes, charterparty disputes, defending and pursuing cargo claims, acting for and against logistics companies and liability insurers in various types of claims regarding policy liability, representing shipowners and P&I Clubs in collision cases and representing banks and trading companies and shipowners on various forms of trading disputes involving cross border jurisdictions.

Ronald’s experience on non-contentious matters include the drafting and commenting on insurance policies for non-marine related products, acting for banks in commenting on export credit insurance and letters of credit, ship sale and purchase, ship finance and preparing commercial tenancy agreements.

Ronald is recognized as one of the Recommended Lawyers in Dispute Resolution (Hong Kong) by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific in 2016. He has written numerous articles and performed speaking engagements on the topics of transportation, logistics, insurance, letters of credit and general strategies in litigation, arbitration and mediation.
