Solar Energy

Demand for solar energy is at an all-time high and businesses require attorneys who understand the issues and challenges facing the industry from multiple perspectives. Troutman Sanders offers innovative solutions that draw on best practices developed during our century of service to the energy community.

We represent investors, developers and utilities in all aspects of renewable-energy project development, finance, and corporate and M&A transactions. We also represent borrowers, sponsors, lessees, lenders and tax-equity investors in a wide range of solar-project loan and lease financings, including balance sheet and project-recourse transactions.

Collectively, we have the rich experience, deep knowledge, and particular focus on solar-energy matters necessary to advise clients on issues such as the following:

  • Project finance
  • Tax
  • Development and construction
  • Energy regulation
  • Transmission
  • Energy trading
  • Renewable portfolio standards (RPSs)
  • Environmental and real estate law

Since 2007, we have served as counsel on transactions covering over 600 solar projects throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. We have experience with some of the largest solar projects in the country, including 200 MW and 300 MW installations. Our experience includes utility-scale power plants and commercial and residential customer-sited distributed generation systems. We also have acted as counsel to some of the nation’s largest banks and developers in the creation, negotiation and documentation of several solar PV funding programs providing debt and tax equity financing for rooftop and ground-mounted distributed generation systems.

Please see our solar brochure for more information on our practice and our recent experience.
