Attorneys Say It's Gotten Harder for Young Lawyers to Get Court Experience

In high-stakes fields like pharmaceutical litigation, for example, defendants do not want to leave trial outcomes up to chance, said Sean Fahey, a partner at Troutman Pepper Hamilton Sanders.
"Sometimes the best trial lawyers learn from testing things out," he said. "Right now because of the nature of the trials, there's just not a ton of opportunity to explore."

And while clients may not want to gamble on junior attorneys at trial, some still work to foster the upcoming generation's advocacy skills, according to Fahey, who said some larger companies run trial schools for their attorneys.
"The people that know how important the jury system is," Fahey said, "are really trying to make sure that lawyers are training the right way."
