Troutman Pepper Director of Diversity and Inclusion Tiffany F. Southerland Earns Young Alumni Award from Penn Law Alumni Society
WASHINGTON – Tiffany F. Southerland, Troutman Pepper’s Director of Diversity and Inclusion, has received a Young Alumni Award from the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School’s Penn Law Alumni Society for her professional achievements. The Society recognizes alumni’s outstanding contributions to the legal profession, their communities, and beyond. Southerland was honored during an in-person reception June 9.
“I am a proud Penn Law alumna and humbled to be the co-recipient of this year’s Young Alumni Award,” Southerland said. “When I graduated law school, I did not know that my career would take me to the business side of the legal profession, but I always knew I wanted to help advance our profession. I look forward to continuing to do that for the next generation of lawyers.”
Southerland leads a team of professional staff members at Troutman Pepper dedicated to advancing the firm and industry in its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. Partnering with several firm committees, Southerland and her team help design and execute various DEI initiatives and programs that reflect the firm’s overall belief that a diverse and inclusive culture produces the most creative and effective solutions for clients.
Southerland earned her JD from University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, where she was a member of the Journal of Law and Social Change and served as president of Penn Law’s Black Law Students Association. She received her bachelor’s degree in human development from Cornell University and her master’s degree in social work from University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion are among Troutman Pepper’s core values. Earlier this year, Troutman Pepper earned a 100 percent rating on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2022 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), a benchmarking survey and report measuring corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ+ workplace equality. Notably, the firm has been involved with the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) since 2009, when the organization was founded.
In 2021, Troutman Pepper earned Diversity Lab’s Mansfield Rule 4.0 Certification Plus status, which aims to increase the representation of diverse lawyers in law firm leadership by broadening the pool of candidates. “Plus” status indicates that, in addition to meeting or exceeding the pipeline consideration requirements for certification, the firm has successfully reached at least 30% diverse lawyer representation in a notable number of its current leadership roles and committees.
