Troutman Sanders Creates New Management Organization
ATLANTA – Troutman Sanders LLP announced today that it has reorganized its management team – including naming a new managing partner – to build a strong foundation for the 113-year-old firm’s future.
Robert W. Webb Jr., who has been Managing Partner for the international law firm for the past 17 years and its Chairman since 2006, will retain the title of Chairman. In that role, Webb will lead a team of four partners in top management positions designed to match management skills with management functions.
The new structure, Webb said, “will place the firm’s stewardship in excellent hands for years to come.”
The management team reporting to Webb is:
* Stephen E. Lewis will become the firm’s Managing Partner effective Jan. 1, 2011. Lewis, 43, has led Troutman Sanders’ Corporate section of more than 150 attorneys since 2006. In that capacity, he has overseen and managed the firm’s seven corporate practice areas, including Securities & Corporate Governance; Mergers, Acquisitions & Business Ventures; Tax; Closely Held Business & Entrepreneurial Services; Healthcare; Financial Institutions; and Trusts & Estates.
* Mark S. Shiembob, a partner in Troutman Sanders’ Richmond, Va., office, member of the firm’s executive committee and former chief of the firm’s Finance section, will immediately become Chairman of the firm’s Partner Compensation committee, a post formerly held by Webb. In his legal practice, Shiembob, 54, specializes in multi-family housing and commercial loan transactions.
* Kevin C. Fitzgerald, managing partner of the firm’s office in Washington, D.C., will immediately become the firm’s Executive Partner for Client Development Strategic Planning. In this newly created role, Fitzgerald, 47, is responsible for planning and implementing the firm’s strategic client development efforts.
* Daniel S. Reinhardt, 61, a litigation partner, continues in the role of firm-wide General Counsel.
Additionally, Andrea M. Farley, a Corporate partner since 2004, will succeed Lewis as Corporate Section Chief in January 2011. Farley, 38, becomes the first female section chief at Troutman Sanders and will lead the second-largest of the law firm’s five sections. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and her law degree from Vanderbilt University.
Lewis, who was unanimously elected Managing Partner by the firm’s partnership on Wednesday, began his career at Troutman Sanders in 1991 as an associate. He was named partner in 1999 and was first elected to the firm’s executive committee in 2003. He received both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina.
Throughout his career, Lewis has used his accounting and finance background to understand his clients’ businesses and provide business-oriented legal advice to management and boards of directors. He specializes in mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and general business matters. He has received numerous legal honors, including being selected five times to Georgia Trend magazine’s Legal Elite and six times as a Super Lawyer by Atlanta Magazine and Law & Politics for merger and acquisition law excellence.
“Steve Lewis is a highly respected lawyer who will be an outstanding leader of Troutman Sanders,” said Webb, 60, who was first elected Managing Partner in 1993. “He has all of the skills necessary to carry on the firm’s tradition of smart growth and unparalleled service to its clients.”
Under Webb’s leadership, Troutman Sanders has grown from one office and 167 attorneys in 1993 to its present-day size of 16 offices and about 680 attorneys. He orchestrated mergers with 150-attorney Mays & Valentine LLP in 2001 and 100-attorney Ross, Dixon & Bell LLP in 2009, as well as the addition of 89 attorneys in New York in 2005. Earlier this month, the firm expanded again, opening an office in Portland, Ore.
“The legacy that Bob Webb has built at Troutman Sanders is amazing,” said Lewis. “I am humbled and excited by the opportunity to succeed him and lead Troutman Sanders during a challenging time for the legal industry.”
