Visa Waivers Extended to Chileans
On February 28, 2014, the Secretary of Homeland Security, in consultation with the Secretary of State, designated Chile as a country that is eligible to participate in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). As a result, citizens, nationals and passport holders from Chile may apply for admission to the United States as temporary visitors for business or pleasure for a period of ninety days or less without first obtaining a visa, provided that they are otherwise eligible for admission under applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.
To enter the United States under VWP, individuals must:
- Be seeking admission as a visitor for business or pleasure for ninety days or less;
- Be a national of a
VWP designated country;
- Present to the air or vessel carrier before departure an electronic passport or a machine-readable passport issued by a designated country.
-
- For countries designated as VWP countries on or after November 17, 2008, including Chile, passports must contain an electronic chip that includes the biographic and biometric information of the passport holder.
This rule went into effect on March 31, 2014.
