Troutman Pepper is proud to host ACE Roundtable at our Atlanta office on August 11 for a Lunch & Learn discussing AI Risks. Alison Grounds will be speaking on “New Compliance Risks Posed by AI.” Full program details are below.

Topic: New Compliance Risks Posed by AI

Summary: ChatGPT! Bard! Midjourney! Machine Learning! Neural Networks! With the recent explosion of available AI tools, many organizations and their employees have been busy exploring ways that AI can be used to improve efficiency and results. However, all of these new tools – and the incredible speed with which they are being developed, updated, and rolled out – could also present a new set of risks that many organizations are only beginning to consider. We’ve convened a panel for our next Lunch & Learn to discuss the new ethical challenges and compliance risks created by AI, featuring Delta Airlines’ Chief Compliance Officer, the leader of Troutman Pepper’s Generative AI Task Force, and the Director of Emory Law School’s new Innovation and Legal Tech Initiative.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify Artificial Intelligence tools, technology, and software available today.
  • Understand the current legal and regulatory landscape surrounding artificial intelligence tools.
  • Consider impact on ethical practices associated with artificial intelligence use.
  • Discover new and increased compliance risks that artificial intelligence tools present to organizations and their employees.
  • Identify how some compliance programs have begun to address these risks.

With the recent explosion of AI awareness and exploration, many companies are trying to decipher the AI Trifecta – Privacy, IP, and Data Management Practices. In the last several months, there has been a wave of developments relating to internal AI procedures, acceptable use guidelines, and training for employees. Privacy, IP, and other company lawyers are struggling with how to empower business and IT while also trying to balance risk, reward, and legal obligations.

  • Overview of evolving industry-specific use cases, benefits, and risks of AI
  • Analysis and predictions into existing and emerging U.S. and global laws, regulations, and industry codes
  • Benchmarking and the mechanics of developing AI policies
  • Insight into critical AI-related legal conundrums – global privacy protections, preventing discrimination, IP rights in output, and building databases versus data scraping
  • Bonus: Q&A session

During the course of this webinar, you will hear from our special guests to provide an in-house perspective on these important AI topics.

Thursday, June 8 • 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. ET

The Pepper Center for Public Service is pleased to invite you to attend the second in a series of programs exploring legal, historical, and policy issues relating to the United States’ relationship with American Indians. Our first talk in the series, an introduction to American Indian Nations’ sovereignty and jurisdiction in Indian Country, was held on May 1, 2023.

Our second talk, scheduled for June 8, 2023 at noon, will explore some of the legal issues involving U.S. treaties with American Indian Nations. We will use, as a case study, the landmark case involving disputes over American Indian fishing rights in the Pacific Northwest that pitted the U.S. and affected American Indian Nations against the State of Washington, and led to the 1974 “Boldt Decision.” Our principal presenter will be Stuart Pierson, a former Troutman partner who, as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, led the federal government’s legal team in that case and who remains connected to the tribes and their continuing fishing rights controversies.

We are also pleased to announce that two principals of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission, Joseph Peters (NWIFC Treasurer and Squaxin Island Natural Resources Policy Representative) and Rob Jones (NWIFC Fisheries Policy Analyst) will join us to share remarks and provide an update on the current state of American Indian fishing rights in the Pacific Northwest.

CLE credit will be offered for this session. This program is approved for MCLE credit for California, Illinois, New Jersey (through reciprocity), and New York (newly admitted and experienced). Troutman Pepper will automatically seek credit in the states where we have office locations unless state restrictions apply. Credit for other jurisdictions may be available upon request. For those licensed in California, Illinois, New Jersey, and/or New York, certificates will be distributed within 30 business days. If you have any questions about CLE credits, please email CLEManagement@troutman.com.
