Chris Carlson, a partner with Troutman Pepper Locke, was quoted in the February 25, 2025 The National Law Journal article, “CFPB Closure Would Leave Consumer Protections in Uncertain Territory, Observers Say.”

Troutman Pepper Locke partner Chris Carlson said the Trump administration has made no indication it even wants other financial services regulators to fill the gap left by a diminished CFPB. Carlson said he expects states—which can also enforce federal consumer protection laws and CFPB rules, in addition to their own—to be more aggressive in the coming years.

“The open question, though, is whether the void that has been left by the CFPB really can be solved by the states,” Carlson said.
