Matthew J. Berns, a partner in Troutman Pepper Locke’s Regulatory Investigations, Strategy + Enforcement Practice Group, was quoted in the November 5, 2025 article, “Troutman Adds Longtime Counsel To NJ Governor, AG,” that appeared in Law360 and Law360 Pulse.

  • Berns told Law360 Pulse he looked forward to working with team leaders Ashley Taylor and Clay Friedman, noting their decades of experience and the nationwide scope of the team’s work.
  • “I’m really happy to be joining that team and ensuring that they’re able to provide those services to clients facing investigations and enforcement actions in New Jersey and other states in the region,” Berns said.
  • The state attorney general team at Troutman Pepper Locke advises clients in highly regulated industries like healthcare and life sciences, financial services and energy. The team faces unique challenges, Berns said, because state attorneys general, unlike other regulators, can be influenced by electoral politics, and investigations can spread from one state to another. Berns said he has the experience necessary to help clients meet those challenges.
  • “Now, unlike earlier in my career, I bring more than a decade of that government service in both the state and federal governments to bear on my work, and so I can help clients navigate those matters with an insider’s perspective,” he said.
  • “I feel like I was fortunate to spend so much of my career working with dedicated public servants,” Berns said. Most rewarding, he said, was to take on projects that directly affect his community, including one time when the New Jersey attorney general’s office handled an environmental enforcement matter for a site he could walk to from his house.
