Will Gaus, chief innovation officer at Troutman Pepper, Alison Grounds, founder and managing partner of Troutman Pepper eMerge, and Andrew Medeiros, director of innovation at Troutman Pepper, were quoted in the August 23, 2024 Law360 Pulse article, “Troutman Pepper’s Generative AI Assistant One Year Later.”
Andrew Medeiros, director of innovation at Troutman Pepper, said in a statement on Wednesday that the firm’s approach to adding new capabilities to Athena is to allow lawyers and business professionals to solve many types of problems.

William Gaus, Troutman Pepper’s chief innovation officer, told Law360 Pulse last year that when Athena was launched, its capabilities were similar to ChatGPT in that it could answer questions and produce written content like blog posts and articles.

All Athena users must first complete an eight-minute ethics training videos, Gaus told Law360 Pulse last year.
Alison Grounds, founder and managing partner of Troutman Pepper’s e-discovery unit eMerge, said in a statement that the firm’s philosophy is not to waste time on tasks that can be done better by technology.
“We have used Athena as a complement to other technologies the firm has invested in to create internal efficiencies that translate to real client values,” she said.
