Navetta Amplifies Firm’s Nationally Recognized Privacy and Cyber Practice With Decades of Industry and Practice Leadership
CHICAGO – David Navetta, a highly accomplished leader in privacy, information security, and technology law, has joined Troutman Pepper Locke as a partner in the firm’s esteemed Privacy and Cyber Practice Group. Navetta, who is ranked in multiple categories by Chambers USA and Chambers Global in privacy, cybersecurity, and incident response, will co-lead the privacy and cyber team.
Prior to joining Troutman Pepper Locke, the Denver-based Navetta was a partner with Cooley and led the build out and scaling of its global privacy practice. He is known as an innovative and strategic thinker with a track record for building and managing world-class privacy and data security legal teams. Navetta has experience counseling clients on novel and cutting-edge data protection issues, including strategic privacy and AI advice, data breach response, cybersecurity risk management, consumer and employee privacy compliance, incident response planning and preparedness, technology transactions, vendor management, board of director advice and consultation, regulatory investigations, litigation, and due diligence in corporate transactions.
His clients seek him out to develop data privacy, ownership and monetization strategies in conjunction with the development of their business models, products, and services. Navetta has helped some of the world’s top corporations effectively respond to complex data security breaches and protect their enterprises. His clients range from startups to large Fortune 500 multinationals across a range of industries — including e-commerce, SaaS, consumer products, name-brand, traditional brick-and-mortar companies, hotels and hospitality, real estate and property management, social media, AI, technology, professional services, health care, financial institutions, and energy.
“David’s arrival expands our 360-degree approach to creatively solve client needs by strategically growing the firm’s capabilities to address the complexity of data protection and cybersecurity challenges in this constantly evolving landscape,” said Ronald Raether, leader of Troutman Pepper Locke’s Privacy and Cyber Practice Group. “He is an incredibly well-known and respected data privacy attorney, and his robust practice, particularly as it pertains to understanding the enhancing, handling and protection of data assets, will be a tremendous asset to providing comprehensive and cutting-edge solutions to our clients’ most pressing data governance issues.”
“David’s leadership elevates our multidisciplinary approach, pairing his technical experience with the strategic insights of former CPOs, CISOs, and regulators on our team,” added James Koenig, co-lead of the firm’s privacy and cyber team. “This synergy allows us to offer clients not just compliance but further extends the range of services that we can provide our clients around innovation in privacy, AI, and cybersecurity resilience.”
Known for his leadership and extensive experience in privacy and data protection law, Navetta is recognized by Chambers USA as an elite lawyer for privacy and data security, by Chambers USA and Chambers Global for privacy and data security: incident response, by The Legal 500 US as a leading lawyer for international litigation and data protection and privacy, as well as by Who’s Who Legal in the areas of information technology and data privacy and protection. He is a Certified Information Privacy Professional through the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
“A pioneer in the data security and privacy legal space with nearly 30 years of experience, David’s extensive background paired with his leadership acumen make him a wonderful fit for our team,” said Andrea Verney Kerstein, Chicago office managing partner. “The respect, trust, and experience he has built up throughout his career is a wonderful addition to the firm.”
Navetta’s diverse legal experiences spanning his career have provided him with a unique perspective and pragmatic approach to enterprise security — including serving as the former U.S. co-chair of Norton Rose Fulbright’s data protection, privacy, and cybersecurity practice group; building his own entrepreneurial endeavor co-founding InfoLawGroup; working as former assistant general counsel for American International Group’s eBusiness Risk Solutions Group in New York for more than three years; serving as former co-chair of the American Bar Association’s Information Security Committee and former chairman of the organization’s Contracting and Risk Management Working Group; and acting as former co-chair of the Payment Card Industry’s Legal Risk and Liability Working Group.
“I am thrilled to join Troutman Pepper Locke and contribute to this multitalented team,” said Navetta. “The firm has demonstrated remarkable growth and success, and I am eager to help further propel the outstanding momentum the team has already established.”
For decades, Troutman Pepper Locke has represented leading global, as well as emerging, technology and life sciences companies. The team, recognized by Chambers USA, Chambers Global, and The Legal 500 as one of the top privacy practices in the U.S., includes privacy and cybersecurity thought leaders and pioneers in emerging issues relating to implementation and compliance, litigation, regulatory investigations, and incident response. Troutman Pepper Locke’s experience leading some of the most high-profile litigation matters and regulatory enforcement actions uniquely positions the firm to address emerging privacy and cyber issues that the world — and the law — have never had to confront before.
The firm’s Privacy and Cyber team extends the range of privacy and cyber services traditionally offered by law firms, drawing upon its unique combination of global knowledge and experience in key areas such as privacy program creation and implementation, licensing, financing and M&A transactions, incident response, litigation, and regulatory investigations and enforcement. This comprehensive 360-degree approach helps the firm provide holistic and innovative solutions to clients’ most complex privacy and cybersecurity challenges.
