Jay R. Mitchell

As a registered patent attorney, Jay focuses his practice on intellectual property matters including patent prosecution, strategic intellectual property counseling, portfolio management, patent procurement (including domestic and foreign rights), patent opinions (freedom to operate, nonnfringement, invalidity and patentability), due diligence, licensing, and the enforcement and defense of patent and trademark rights for a wide range of U.S. domestic and foreign companies.

Jay counsels clients in a variety of industries, covering a wide range of technologies, including mechanical and electrical devices, analog and digital electronics, data and voice communication systems, computer hardware, software, medical devices, computer vision, graphics processing, HD video, mobile device management and security, power supplies, and robotics and automation systems.

Before joining the legal profession, Jay was an engineer and gained industry experience designing analog and digital integrated circuits, developing consumer electronics, and performed experimental research in quantum optics and quantum computing.

• Obtained favorable summary judgment for a spring and seals manufacturer falsely accused of infringing a competitor’s patent.
• Advised standards bodies in the optical disc/data storage industry of which patents should be included in related patent pools.
• Defended several large telecom providers from patent infringement claims by a licensing company in the Eastern District of Texas.
• Successfully asserted the patent rights of a Fortune 500 digital chip manufacturer against a competitor, effectively securing the market niche.
• Enforced patent rights of several companies against large software companies.
• Successfully licensed digital circuit patents to several large cell phone manufacturers.
• Prosecuted patents in the area of electronics and software, including analog and digital circuits, power supplies, video processing, IP telephony, biomedical devices, semiconductor processing and software and web applications, automation systems, and network device management and security.
