Mark has more than 10 years of patent prosecution experience supported by 25 years of hands-on engineering and business experience. During his previous career as an electrical engineer and inventor, Mark designed and built numerous electronics devices for optical communications, robotics and sensing applications. Prior to joining Troutman Pepper Locke, Mark owned an electrical engineering consulting firm, which provided the robotics and sensing industries with custom electronics design and prototyping.

Mark’s ability to quickly understand and translate inventors’ complex technical ideas into patentable inventions is one of the differentiating factors on which the firm’s clients rely.

  • Successfully prosecuted and obtained patents for software-related inventions initially rejected as nonpatentable subject matter under the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank International.
  • Worked strategically with clients over several years to build multiple patent portfolios for protecting core businesses and obtaining investment funding.
  • Mentored inventors in the art of patent prosecution to create in-house patent advisors, resulting in disclosure improvements and overall patent prosecution cost savings for clients.
