Matt focuses his practice on advising boards of directors and special committees in connection with restructurings and liability management, as well as counseling stakeholders across multiple industries in complex bankruptcies and out-of-court workouts.
Matt serves as co-chair of the firm's Bankruptcy practice and as the diversity, equity, and inclusion partner for the Financial Restructuring + Insolvency practice.

Whether unlocking value in a distressed acquisition or advising on high-stakes litigation, Matt helps clients navigate the thorny issues that often arise in bankruptcy and workouts.
Matt represents companies in connection with restructurings and liability management opportunities, developing and implementing compliance programs, and defending insolvency-related litigation. He advises private equity and other strategic buyers through due diligence to closing, including acquisitions in the distressed space. Matt also helps lenders evaluate and enforce their remedies. His multidisciplinary practice has involved matters across a range of industries, including cryptocurrency, energy, health care, real estate, construction, financial services, aviation, hospitality, transportation, and media.
Matt is an advocate for diversity and inclusion in the workplace and understands the value of diverse teams. Private and public companies consult with Matt for his knowledge on best practices to attract and employ diverse talent and on practical ways to gauge progress, both internally and with their partners. He is an active member of the LGBTQIA+ community, co-chair for the Pride at Troutman Pepper LGBTQIA+ Affinity Group, and a member of the leadership for Lambda Legal.
Matt is the former chair of the bankruptcy section of the Georgia State Bar Association and a frequent author and speaker on insolvency-related issues. He is well connected within the restructuring community, servicing on the events committee for the New York City chapter of the Turnaround Management Association and the Southeast Advisory Committee of the American Bankruptcy Institute.
