Melanie focuses her practice on helping financial services companies comply with an array of federal and state laws, including those that apply to installment loans, credit cards, private student loans, deposit accounts, retail installment contracts, buy-now-pay-later products, prepaid cards, and earned wage access (EWA) services.
She works with licensed lenders, fintech companies, national and regional banks, consumer reporting agencies, and payment card issuers on regulatory compliance issues, account agreements and disclosures, diligence reviews, and advertising guidance. Melanie advises on matters related to the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the Truth in Lending Act (TILA), the Electronic Fund Transfer Act (EFTA), the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), home solicitation sales laws, state licensed lender laws, and state rent-to-own laws.
Additionally, she performs pro bono work in partnership with the National Veterans Legal Services Program and the Education Law Center.
Prior to joining the firm, Melanie clerked for Chief Justice Lorie S. Gildea on the Minnesota Supreme Court and was a civil division law clerk in the Minneapolis City Attorney's Office. She gained industry experience working at a credit union and a community bank before attending law school.
Melanie graduated magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School where she received her J.D. and served as lead managing editor of the Minnesota Law Review. She attended the College of Saint Benedict and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree.
