Located in the heart of the nation’s capital, our Washington, D.C. office is strategically positioned in the dynamic regulatory and policy corridor close to Capitol Hill, federal courts, regulatory agencies, and other executive branch offices. Our office, first opened in 1969, now houses more than 150 professionals, including former senior federal regulators and counsel from various federal government agencies, to better counsel clients on compliance and enforcement matters necessary to affect change in Washington.

Our Washington, D.C. office offers a broad range of professional services in key sectors, including energy regulation and litigation, tax (including utility tax), environmental law, insurance and reinsurance, intellectual property, antitrust, white collar and government investigations, commercial and regulatory litigation, financial services and real estate finance (including our nationally recognized multifamily housing finance practice), government contracts, corporate law, technology, customs and international trade, and health care. We also provide general antitrust counseling, CFIUS compliance advice, advertising, marketing, and trade regulation advice to companies that manufacture and advertise consumer products.

Our energy practice represents interstate natural gas pipeline and storage companies, oil pipeline companies, merchant generator interests, electric utilities, renewable energy developers and owners, electric storage companies, and local distribution companies on matters before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Department of Energy, and other federal agencies. Our federal public law and policy practice handles public policy and government relations, advising clients on federal legislation, regulations, and political matters across various sectors such as health care, transportation, high technology, hospitality, gaming, natural resources, and education.

Our intellectual property team provides transactional patent services for companies in the chemical, heavy machinery, metal, telecommunications, electronics, computers, software, and food industries, among others. Our health care and insurance practice regularly represents managed care organizations, health insurers, and their intermediaries in complex transactions, insurance regulation, and corporate matters. Our bank regulatory and transactional practice represents community banks and other financial institutions on federal and state regulatory matters and in complex corporate transactions, and we engage in trade association representation.

Our real estate practice provides real estate lending services involving all collateral types, handles a wide variety of general and specialty leasing, and offers real estate acquisition and development services, including multifamily, raw land, hospitality, office, and industrial properties. We also provide local counsel document review and opinion work for the jurisdictions of D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

The Washington office is also home to the federal practice of Troutman Strategies, a stand-alone full-service government relations, strategic advocacy, and issue management firm.
